On 8 September, UNESCO awarded six literacy initiatives. One is Chiapas Puede, in Mexico: lessons in Spanish and Indigenous languages, community study groups and a teaching approach adapted to local circumstances. [1]

In UNESCO’s account, Antonio Gómez Gómez, a 65-year-old farmer, uses a Spanish workbook while his teacher explains in Tzotzil. He says he has learned to read and check his pay. In San Juan Chamula, María Díaz López helps older people learn to write, including through pictures. [2]
