San Giovanni Valdarno inaugurated a new riverbank protection project on 26 September along the Arno, between the Industria Vetraria Valdarnese glassworks and the Ipazia d’Alessandria bridge. The council puts the total value of this phase of works at €2.33 million. [1]

Large stone blocks were installed to counter erosion, the removal of ground by flowing water. Part of the riverbed was also reshaped, with the aim of directing the current towards the centre and reducing pressure on the banks. This is a local risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee against every future flood. [1]

The former Posfortunato site, used during construction, is also part of plans for the Arno cycle route. The council intends to create a stopping point and move the route closer to the river here. Those improvements are still to come: the completed riverbank defences are today’s news, rather than the opening of a new cycle path. [1]
