On 26 October, Northern Ireland’s environment department, DAERA, announced a pilot project on the River Derg. The Northern Ireland Environment Agency, the Loughs Agency and angling association FASTA will study how measurements taken directly in the river could help identify poor water-quality events. [1]

NIEA currently samples three Water Framework Directive monitoring locations on the Derg monthly. The pilot will assess what more frequent observations add, using equipment capable of recording temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH and turbidity. Data will be collected by remote transmission or local recorders, depending on equipment and signal availability. [1]

The Derg is ecologically important and a source of drinking water; the department notes pollution incidents in the Derg and Mourne rivers. The pilot will compare changes in water parameters with recorded incidents. It is testing a monitoring approach: the announcement does not demonstrate a reduction in pollution already achieved. [1]
