Istat has released the study commuting matrix from Italy’s 2021 permanent census. The announcement is dated 22 September 2026 and was updated on 23 September: the publication is new, not the year observed. The table describes how many residents travel to study within their municipality or to another one. [1]

The reference date is 31 December 2021. It covers journeys to a usual place of study at least three days a week, starting from the person’s residence and returning each day. The methodological note specifies that students who work and journeys abroad are excluded. [1][2]

The figures are estimates combining surveys, statistical registers and administrative records, rather than a count of every journey. Istat makes the results accessible and publishes its method. One editorial example of a possible use is comparing links between two towns before investigating transport needs; the table alone cannot show whether a bus route is adequate today. [2][1]
