The history of the ozone hole is not a line that falls every year. In NASA’s series of annual maximum daily areas, the largest value is 29.9 million square kilometres in 2000. The maximum reached 22.4 million in 2024 and 22.9 million in 2025: the latter is slightly higher. This chart includes every available year from 1979 to 2025, with a gap in 1995, for which the table has no data. [1]

NASA defines the Antarctic ozone-hole boundary using a threshold of 220 Dobson units, a measure of ozone in the atmospheric column. It is not an area with no ozone. These numbers describe each year’s maximum extent, not its seasonal average. This historical chart does not predict the 2026 result or, by itself, establish a steady trend. [2][1]

That is quite a lot of good for one day.
